Trump Cancels Pakistan Trip For Iran Talks
US President Donald Trump has cancelled the planned visit of Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Pakistan for talks linked to the Iran conflict, raising fresh uncertainty over diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations.
Trump Cancels Pakistan Visit For Iran Talks
Trump said he instructed his envoys not to travel to Islamabad, where they were expected to participate in discussions involving Iranian officials. The trip was aimed at exploring a possible diplomatic path amid continuing tensions over the US-Israel-Iran conflict.
According to the latest reports, Trump said he did not want senior officials taking a long flight only to “sit around talking about nothing.” He also suggested that Iran could contact the United States directly if it wanted to resume meaningful talks.
Steve Witkoff And Jared Kushner Trip Called Off
Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy, and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser, were expected to represent Washington in the Pakistan-based diplomatic effort. Their planned visit had been seen as part of a fresh attempt to restart negotiations after earlier rounds failed to produce a breakthrough.
The cancellation came shortly after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Islamabad for talks with Pakistani officials. Iran had indicated that any engagement with Washington would be indirect, with Pakistan acting as a mediator.
Iran Talks Face Fresh Setback
The development marks another setback for efforts to reduce tensions in the region. Pakistan had been trying to facilitate discussions between Washington and Tehran, but Trump’s decision has now placed the immediate future of the talks in doubt.
The United States and Iran remain divided over the terms of any ceasefire or wider diplomatic settlement. For now, Washington has signalled that it will not send envoys unless it sees a clearer path to results.
