John Ternus Takes Over as Apple CEO

Tim Cook has stepped down as Apple’s chief executive after 15 years at the helm, with longtime hardware chief John Ternus taking over as CEO from September 1, 2026. Cook will remain closely involved with the company as executive chairman of Apple’s board.

Ternus, previously Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, officially assumes the chief executive role following a succession process approved unanimously by the company’s board.

He has spent more than two decades at Apple and has played a major role in developing products including the iPhone, iPad, Mac and AirPods.

Ternus also joins Apple’s board of directors as part of the leadership transition.

Cook, who succeeded Steve Jobs as CEO in 2011, will continue working with Apple as executive chairman.

In the new position, he is expected to remain involved in selected strategic matters, including engagement with governments and policymakers around the world.

Arthur Levinson, Apple’s longtime chairman, becomes lead independent director following Cook’s move to executive chairman.

Apple Enters New Era With AI Challenge

Cook leaves the CEO role after overseeing a dramatic expansion of Apple’s global business, including the growth of services, wearables and its enormous installed base of devices.

Ternus now takes charge as Apple faces growing pressure to strengthen its position in artificial intelligence while maintaining momentum across its core hardware businesses.

His first major product event as CEO is expected on September 9, when Apple is scheduled to unveil its next generation of iPhones and other products.
