Trump Announces Hamas Disarmament Agreement
US President Donald Trump has announced that his Board of Peace has reached an agreement aimed at the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza. However, Hamas has not publicly confirmed its acceptance, while Israel has yet to formally approve the proposed terms.
Hamas Disarmament Plan for Gaza
The proposed arrangement is part of Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan and would require Hamas to surrender its weapons through a phased process. Heavy weapons, military infrastructure and tunnel networks would also be dismantled under international supervision.
The process could take several months, with weapons expected to be transferred to Gaza’s new Palestinian administration for secure storage or destruction. Further operational details have not yet been publicly released.
Israeli Withdrawal Linked to Disarmament
The plan reportedly links the gradual disarmament of armed groups with a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. An International Stabilization Force and a newly organised Palestinian police service would assume responsibility for security.
Trump said the agreement could allow a non-militant Palestinian administration to govern Gaza in coordination with the Board of Peace. Hamas previously dissolved its governing authority in the territory, but questions remained over its weapons and military presence.
Major Obstacles Remain for Gaza Agreement
Egypt, Qatar and Turkey were credited with helping mediate the negotiations. Despite Trump’s announcement, the agreement remains uncertain because neither Hamas nor the Israeli government has publicly confirmed final acceptance.
Israeli officials have reportedly expressed reservations about tying military withdrawal to a lengthy disarmament process. Implementation would also depend on verification mechanisms, international security deployments and both sides fulfilling their commitments.
The announcement nevertheless represents reported progress on one of the most difficult elements of the Gaza peace process.
