Former UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as the Member of Parliament for Holborn and St Pancras, ending an 11-year parliamentary career. Starmer said he plans to focus on international affairs after leaving frontline British politics.

Starmer informed his local Labour constituency organisation of his decision and said the time had come to “pass the baton” to a successor.
He has represented Holborn and St Pancras since 2015, succeeding longtime Labour MP Frank Dobson. Starmer later became Labour leader in 2020 before leading the party to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election.
His departure from Parliament comes weeks after he stepped down as Prime Minister following mounting political pressure.
Starmer to Focus on International Affairs
The former Labour leader said his next phase would concentrate on international issues including defence, security, trade and technology.
He also intends to continue work on combating violence against women and girls, an issue he has highlighted throughout his legal and political career.
Starmer said he was proud of achievements delivered during his time representing the constituency, citing measures involving school meals, workers’ rights, housing and healthcare.
Holborn and St Pancras By-Election Ahead
Starmer’s resignation will trigger a by-election in Holborn and St Pancras, traditionally regarded as a strong Labour seat.
He said he would not publicly endorse any candidate seeking to replace him and would instead support whoever is selected by the local Labour Party.
The contest is expected to attract significant political attention as Labour adjusts to its new leadership under Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
