CJP Calls Off September 5 Protest After SC Order
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has withdrawn its proposed September 5 protest march in Delhi after the Supreme Court ordered the closure of FIRs linked to the July student protests and recorded further assurances from the Centre.
CJP Withdraws September 5 Delhi Protest
CJP co-convener Saurav Das personally informed a Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant that the organisation was withdrawing its planned march.
Das said the decision followed positive assurances from the Union government and the “judicial sanctity” provided to those commitments through the court’s order.
The September 5 demonstration had been planned from India Gate towards the New Delhi Police Headquarters over allegations that commitments made when the earlier agitation ended on July 25 remained unfulfilled.
Supreme Court Closes Student Protest FIRs
Invoking its powers under Article 142, the Supreme Court ordered that FIRs registered across states and Union Territories over protest incidents between July 20 and 25 should not be pursued and must be treated as closed.
The court also barred authorities from registering fresh FIRs over those protest incidents.
An exception was permitted concerning 2,873 individuals whom Delhi Police said had serious criminal antecedents and whose alleged involvement in bodily harm or property destruction could require investigation.
Centre Gets Three Months for Compensation Policy
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that the Centre and the governments of Bihar, Assam, West Bengal and Maharashtra had moved to honour commitments made to CJP leaders.
The Supreme Court also recorded the Centre’s commitment to formulate a pan-India compensation policy for families of students who died by suicide following the NEET-UG 2026 cancellation.
The government has been given three months to finalise the compensation framework.
