China Slams Trump Over ‘Hellhole’ Jibe
China has criticised US President Donald Trump after he shared remarks by conservative radio host Michael Savage referring to India and China as a “hellhole,” triggering sharp reactions in both New Delhi and Beijing.
China Responds To Trump’s Hellhole Remark
Chinese embassy spokesperson Yu Jing took a direct swipe at Trump, saying real partnerships are built on respect and not rhetoric. Her response came after Trump amplified Savage’s comments linked to birthright citizenship and migrants from countries including India and China.
Yu also used the moment to highlight India-China ties, contrasting Beijing’s diplomatic messaging with Washington’s handling of India. Her statement suggested that public insults and racially loaded remarks could damage the tone of international relations.
India Rejects Remarks As Inappropriate
India had already rejected Savage’s comments, describing them as uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste. The remarks had drawn attention because they targeted Indians and Chinese nationals who travel to the United States before childbirth to secure birthright citizenship for their children.
The controversy comes at a sensitive time when India-US ties remain strategically important, with bipartisan support in Washington. However, Trump’s decision to share the remarks has created political discomfort.
Democrats Criticise Trump’s Social Media Post
Democrats in the House Foreign Affairs Committee also criticised Trump, accusing him of amplifying racist commentary at a time when the United States is dealing with serious global challenges.
The row has now given China an opportunity to publicly position itself as a country seeking respectful ties with India. While India-China relations remain complicated due to border and strategic tensions, Beijing’s response shows how Trump’s social media post has opened a diplomatic flashpoint involving Washington, New Delhi and Beijing.
