Norway Says No Double Standards On Law

Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has said his country does not follow double standards in foreign policy, insisting that Oslo condemns violations of international law whether they are committed by Russia, the United States or Israel.

Norway Foreign Minister On International Law

Eide said Norway’s position is based on consistent support for international law, not geopolitical convenience. He said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Israel’s actions in Gaza and the United States’ military actions must all be judged by the same legal standards.

His remarks came amid growing global criticism that Western countries apply different rules to allies and adversaries depending on political interests.

Norway Position On Gaza And Ukraine

Norway has been one of the European countries openly critical of Israel’s conduct in Gaza while also strongly opposing Russia’s war against Ukraine. Eide said the credibility of the international order depends on applying the same principles across conflicts.

He also said countries must avoid selective outrage and defend civilian protection, sovereignty and humanitarian law in every situation.

India Norway Diplomatic Context

The comments came as India and Norway continue to expand engagement during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Oslo. Both countries have discussed trade, investment, clean energy, maritime cooperation and global security issues.

Norway’s statement underlines its effort to present itself as a consistent voice on international law at a time when wars in Ukraine and West Asia have sharpened global divisions.
