Karti Chidambaram Calls DMK Backstabber Remark Unfair

Congress leader Karti Chidambaram has rejected the DMK’s “backstabber” criticism after the Congress decided to support Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in forming the next government in Tamil Nadu.

Karti Chidambaram Defends Congress Move

Karti Chidambaram said the DMK’s attack on the Congress was unfair, even as he acknowledged the long-standing relationship between the two parties. The DMK has ended its alliance with the Congress after the party chose to back Vijay’s TVK.

The DMK-Congress alliance had been in place since 2004 and played an important role in Tamil Nadu politics for two decades.

Congress Says Mandate Favours Vijay

Chidambaram said the people’s mandate required that Vijay be given an opportunity to form the government. He argued that refusing support to TVK would have created a political stalemate in the state.

TVK emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election but fell short of a clear majority. Congress support has become crucial in Vijay’s attempt to prove numbers and stake claim to form the government.

DMK Congress Alliance Ends

The DMK has strongly criticised the Congress decision and accused the party of betraying voters who supported the DMK-led alliance. The “backstabber” remark reflected anger within the party over Congress shifting support after the election.

The Congress, however, has presented its decision as a response to the fractured mandate. The development marks a major political realignment in Tamil Nadu and raises fresh questions about the future of opposition unity in the state.
