Assam Bridge Collapse Halts Train Services

Heavy rainfall and flooding have damaged key infrastructure across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, with a large portion of a railway bridge collapsing in Assam’s Dhemaji district and train services suspended on the affected route.

Assam Railway Bridge Collapse

The bridge collapse took place in Dhemaji after river waters rose sharply following intense rainfall. The district recorded more than 110 mm of rain in 24 hours, leading to swelling rivers and severe erosion near railway infrastructure.

Train operations between Murkongselek and Silapathar under the Tinsukia division have been suspended. Railway officials said traffic had already been stopped before the collapse because of flooding, and no train damage or injuries were reported.

Dhemaji Floods Disrupt Rail Services

The damaged bridge was originally built in 1965 and later converted to broad gauge. Officials said the bridge structure was considered safe, but heavy rain washed away a large portion of the riverbank and made one of its piers unstable.

The flood situation has affected more than 15,000 people in Dhemaji district, while over 22,000 people have been impacted across Assam. State authorities said they are monitoring the situation and mobilising resources for immediate relief and longer-term rehabilitation.

Arunachal Pradesh Flash Floods

Neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh has also seen heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides. Road connectivity has been hit in several areas, including East Siang district, where landslides and mudslips blocked multiple routes.

Weather authorities have issued red and orange alerts for parts of Arunachal Pradesh, warning of very heavy rainfall. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel as disaster response teams remain on alert.
