Netanyahu Orders Removal of West Bank Outposts
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the dismantling of unauthorised settler outposts in the occupied West Bank, amid growing scrutiny over settlement activity and violence involving Israeli settlers and Palestinians.
Netanyahu Targets Unauthorised West Bank Outposts
The directive applies to settler outposts established without formal approval from the Israeli government. Such sites are often initially formed using caravans or prefabricated structures, although some have later received state recognition or support.
Around 100 outposts could reportedly be affected by the order, though authorities have not announced a detailed timetable for evacuations or demolitions.
The move does not apply uniformly to all Israeli settlements in the West Bank and is focused on specific outposts considered unauthorised under Israeli law.
Smotrich Opposes West Bank Evacuation Move
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a prominent supporter of settlement expansion, said he opposed the decision.
He indicated that the directive concerned sites built in Areas A and B of the West Bank, where the Palestinian Authority exercises varying degrees of administrative control under the Oslo framework.
Smotrich has continued to support expansion and formalisation of Israeli settlements in Area C, which remains under full Israeli control.
Pressure Grows Over Settler Violence
The decision comes amid increased international criticism of violence by some Israeli settlers against Palestinian communities in the West Bank.
The United States has also called for stronger action against those responsible for violent attacks.
The West Bank contains both Israeli settlements formally recognised by Israel and numerous unauthorised outposts. Most of the international community considers Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory illegal under international law, a position disputed by Israel.
