Amritsar Airport Drone Scare Diverts Seven Flights
Suspected drone-like objects spotted near Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport in Amritsar triggered a major security alert late Sunday night, forcing authorities to temporarily suspend operations and divert seven incoming flights.
Seven Flights Diverted From Amritsar Airport
Airport officials said the suspicious objects were noticed near the airport at around 10 pm on September 6. As a precaution, Air Traffic Control suspended landing operations between 9.50 pm and 11.15 pm.
Seven incoming flights were diverted during the disruption, with two sent to Chandigarh and five to Delhi. The affected services included domestic as well as international flights.
Operations resumed after authorities assessed the situation and no further suspicious aerial activity was detected.
Security Agencies Probe Suspected Drone Activity
The suspected objects were reportedly observed outside the airport perimeter wall, prompting an immediate response from airport security personnel and law enforcement agencies.
The Central Industrial Security Force increased vigilance around the airport, while Punjab Police began investigating whether the objects were drones and, if confirmed, who was operating them.
Preliminary suspicions include the possibility that the drones were launched locally, but investigators have not established their origin or purpose.
Cross-Border Angle Also Under Examination
The incident is being treated seriously because Amritsar airport is located relatively close to the India-Pakistan border.
Punjab has previously recorded cases of drones allegedly being used from across the border to transport narcotics, weapons and ammunition. Security agencies are therefore examining a possible cross-border angle alongside other explanations.
However, officials have not confirmed any connection between Sunday’s incident and Pakistan-based drone activity, and the investigation remains underway.
