Congo Cancels World Cup Camp Over Ebola Fears

Congo has cancelled a three-day World Cup preparation camp and a planned farewell event for fans in Kinshasa due to Ebola concerns, as the national team continues preparations outside the country.

Congo World Cup Camp Cancelled

The cancelled camp was meant to be the first stage of Congo’s World Cup build-up before the team moved to Europe and then the United States. Team officials said only the Kinshasa leg has been cancelled, while the rest of the preparation schedule remains unchanged.

Congo is preparing for its first FIFA World Cup appearance since 1974, when the country competed as Zaire.

Ebola Outbreak In Congo

The decision follows an Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo involving the Bundibugyo strain. The outbreak has reportedly caused more than 130 deaths and nearly 600 suspected cases, prompting international health concern.

The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. The development has forced football authorities to adjust team movement and public engagement plans.

Congo World Cup Preparations Continue

Congo is scheduled to play World Cup warm-up matches against Denmark in Belgium on June 3 and Chile in Spain on June 9. The team is then expected to move to Houston from June 11 for the final phase of preparations.

FIFA has said it is monitoring the situation and remains in contact with the Congo DR Football Association. Congo is placed in Group K and will face Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan in the tournament.
