Telangana May Gain 60 More Assembly Seats
Telangana could gain 60 more Assembly seats in the next delimitation exercise, significantly reshaping the State’s political map if the proposed expansion goes ahead. The current Assembly strength of 119 may rise to 179, in line with a broader proposal to increase the number of seats in State legislatures and Parliament ahead of the 2029 elections.
Telangana Assembly Seats May Rise To 179
Under the proposal being discussed, Telangana’s Assembly would expand by 50%, taking the total from 119 to 179 seats. That would mean 60 new constituencies across the State, creating a major shift in electoral arithmetic and increasing the majority mark needed to form a government. The move is expected to redraw political calculations for all major parties ahead of the next Assembly election.
Hyderabad Region Likely To Gain More Seats
Much of the increase is expected to benefit the Hyderabad metropolitan belt, especially Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy districts, where population growth and urban expansion have been strongest. Reports suggest this region could receive the biggest share of the new constituencies if the exercise is carried out on current demographic patterns. Such a change would further increase the political weight of the Greater Hyderabad zone in State elections.
Delimitation Debate Linked To Wider National Concerns
The seat expansion discussion comes amid a wider national debate over delimitation and representation after 2026. While an increase in Assembly seats would give Telangana more constituencies internally, the larger political controversy remains over how Lok Sabha seats may be redrawn and whether southern States could lose relative influence at the national level. In Telangana, the immediate impact of an Assembly expansion would be deeper local representation, but also a major redrawing of constituency boundaries and political strategy.
