Trump Floats Renaming New Mexico ‘New America’
US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the state of New Mexico as “New America”, sharing an altered map on social media in his latest proposal to change a prominent American geographic name. No formal process to rename the state has been announced.
Trump Suggests ‘New America’ for New Mexico
Trump shared an image on Truth Social showing a map of New Mexico with the word “Mexico” crossed out and replaced with “America”.
He later wrote that “many people” had suggested changing the state’s name and described “New America” as more prestigious and attractive. Trump also repeated his unsubstantiated allegation that New Mexico was a major “vote cheating” state.
The White House subsequently amplified the original post on its official social media account. However, there has been no announcement of an executive order or other formal action seeking to change New Mexico’s name.
New Mexico Governor Rejects Trump Proposal
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, rejected the suggestion, stressing the state’s long-established historical identity.
The name New Mexico predates the creation of the United States and derives from the Spanish “Nuevo México”. New Mexico formally became the 47th US state in 1912.
Grisham accused Trump of focusing on symbolic renaming while the country faced more pressing economic and international issues.
Trump Continues Geographic Renaming Push
The proposal follows Trump’s previous moves involving other geographic names. His administration renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” for US federal usage and, more recently, ordered Lake Ontario to be called “Lake America” domestically.
The New Mexico suggestion nevertheless remains, for now, a political proposal rather than an officially implemented name change.
