INDIA Bloc Opposes Centre’s Delimitation Bill
Opposition parties in the INDIA bloc have announced that they will oppose the Centre’s proposed Delimitation Bill, while continuing to support women’s reservation in legislatures. The bloc said its objection is not to women’s representation, but to what it described as an unfair and politically driven attempt to redraw parliamentary strength in a way that could alter the federal balance.
INDIA Bloc Opposes Delimitation Bill
After a meeting of alliance leaders in New Delhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the INDIA bloc had taken a united stand against the proposed bill. The opposition’s position is that any delimitation exercise must protect fair representation for all regions and must not become a tool to politically advantage one set of States over another. The issue has quickly emerged as one of the sharpest flashpoints in national politics.
Women’s Reservation Gets Support From Opposition
The INDIA bloc made clear that it continues to support the Women’s Reservation framework. Opposition leaders argued that one-third reservation for women should be implemented without using it as a route to push through a controversial delimitation process. Their position is that women’s representation and delimitation should not be politically bundled in a way that creates distrust among States already worried about losing influence.
Delimitation Debate Triggers Federal Concerns
A major concern among opposition parties, especially in southern India, is that a population-linked delimitation model could reduce the relative voice of States that have performed better on population control. That has turned the issue into more than just an electoral reform debate, with the opposition framing it as a question of federal fairness, regional balance and parliamentary justice. The INDIA bloc’s united stand signals that the bill is likely to face strong political resistance in Parliament.
