Southwest China Earthquake Kills Two
A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck China’s southwestern Guangxi region early on Monday, killing two people and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate as buildings collapsed and rescue operations continued.
Guangxi Earthquake Causes Evacuations
The earthquake hit Liuzhou in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 7,000 people from affected areas. Search and rescue teams were deployed after the tremor damaged buildings and raised safety concerns across nearby villages.
Officials said one person remained missing after the quake, while four others were taken to hospital. Their injuries were not reported to be life-threatening.
Buildings Collapse In Liuzhou
At least 13 buildings collapsed following the earthquake, according to Chinese state media. Rescue workers were seen moving through damaged areas as authorities assessed structural risks and continued searching for trapped or missing residents.
The quake struck in the early hours, increasing the risk to residents who were inside homes when buildings began to shake. Local authorities have continued inspections to determine whether more structures are unsafe.
Transport Disruptions After Earthquake
Railway authorities warned of possible transport disruptions while teams inspected rail infrastructure for damage. Train services in the region may face delays as safety checks continue across affected lines.
State media reported that communication links, power supply, water, gas and traffic systems in the affected area were functioning normally. Authorities are continuing rescue, relief and damage assessment operations in Liuzhou and nearby areas.
