Nepal Ex-Minister Flags China Flood Warning Gap
Nepal’s former Forest and Environment Minister Madhav Prasad Chaulagain has raised concerns over what he described as a failure of timely information sharing from China before the catastrophic flash floods that swept across the Nepal-Tibet border region. Chinese authorities have disputed claims that inadequate warning from their side contributed to the disaster.
Ex-Minister Flags Nepal-China Warning Gap
Chaulagain said Nepal received insufficient advance information about conditions upstream in Tibet before the flood entered the country.
He said Nepal experienced a smaller glacial flood in the same region in 2025, after which both countries recognised the need for better cross-border early-warning mechanisms.
According to Nepalese hydrology officials, information about Wednesday’s flood reached authorities only after the surge had already crossed the border, severely limiting the time available to warn communities downstream.
China has rejected allegations that it failed to provide necessary warning, saying the disaster developed suddenly and caused extensive damage on both sides.
Glacier Collapse Blamed for Nepal Floods
Preliminary assessments indicate that a massive collapse involving ice, rock and debris blocked a river near the border before the natural barrier failed, releasing a destructive flood downstream.
Early reports suggesting an earthquake caused the disaster have been questioned by subsequent scientific assessments. Experts are continuing to investigate the precise trigger, including the possible role of rising temperatures and glacial instability.
Nepal Flood Toll Expected to Rise
At least 270 deaths have been reported in Nepal, while hundreds more people remain missing across the wider disaster zone.
Chaulagain warned that the eventual toll could be substantially higher because many pilgrims, trekkers and informal travellers may not appear in official records.
The disaster has also destroyed dozens of kilometres of roads and numerous bridges, severely complicating rescue operations.
