Sonia Gandhi Attacks Centre Over Gaza Silence

Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi has sharply criticised the Modi government over its response to the Gaza conflict, accusing it of maintaining what she called a “stony silence” while several countries have spoken out against Israel’s military actions. Her remarks have triggered a fresh political exchange between the Congress and the BJP.

Sonia Gandhi Gaza Remarks

Sonia Gandhi said India must speak with moral clarity on the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza. She described Israel’s military campaign as “genocide” and argued that India’s silence was inconsistent with the country’s long-standing support for the Palestinian cause.

She said India had historically taken an independent position on West Asia and had supported justice, peace and a two-state solution. According to her, the present government’s approach marks a departure from that legacy.

Modi Government Gaza Silence

Sonia Gandhi questioned why the Centre had not taken a stronger public position despite rising global concern over civilian deaths and destruction in Gaza. She argued that India’s response should reflect both humanitarian values and national interest.

She also said silence on the crisis could not be explained rationally or morally, especially when many countries and international voices were calling for accountability and relief for civilians.

Congress BJP Foreign Policy Row

The BJP rejected the criticism and accused the Congress of using foreign policy for vote-bank politics. The ruling party said the government’s position on international issues is guided by India’s strategic interests and diplomatic priorities.

The exchange has added a new political dimension to India’s debate on the Israel-Palestine conflict. It also comes as opposition leaders continue to question whether India’s West Asia policy has moved away from its earlier balancing approach.
