Myanmar Emerges As Key Opium Source

Myanmar has emerged as a major source of illicit opium supply after a sharp decline in Afghanistan’s production, raising security concerns along India’s eastern border. Indian anti-narcotics agencies are closely tracking trafficking routes through the Northeast as drug networks adapt to new regional supply patterns.

Myanmar Opium Supply Threat To India

Myanmar’s rise as a key opium source is being linked to prolonged conflict, economic distress and expanding poppy cultivation in areas close to the Golden Triangle. The shift comes after Afghanistan’s opium production fell sharply following the Taliban’s crackdown on poppy cultivation.

The change has increased focus on India’s eastern border, particularly the routes connecting Myanmar with Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland. Officials are concerned that these corridors are being used for moving heroin, opium-based drugs and synthetic narcotics into India.

India Myanmar Border Drug Trafficking

The India-Myanmar border remains vulnerable due to difficult terrain, ethnic linkages across the frontier and porous stretches that are hard to monitor. Traffickers are also believed to be using established smuggling networks to move narcotics from Myanmar into the Northeast before pushing them further into mainland India.

The Manipur corridor and Mizoram’s Champhai route are seen as particularly sensitive because of their proximity to Myanmar’s drug-producing regions. Enforcement agencies are also tracking links between narcotics smuggling, arms trafficking and insurgent financing.

NCB Anti Drug Strategy

The Narcotics Control Bureau has flagged the growing complexity of India’s drug threat, including cross-border trafficking, synthetic drugs, darknet networks and use of advanced smuggling methods. The Centre has also released a Vision Document on Drug Control for 2026-2029 to strengthen coordination between central agencies and states.

The anti-drug strategy focuses on intelligence-led enforcement, control of precursor chemicals, rehabilitation, capacity building and stronger coordination among enforcement bodies.
