PM Modi Highlights ‘Democracy and Humanity First’ in Guyana
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a historic visit to Guyana, underscored India’s commitment to fostering global cooperation based on the principles of “democracy and humanity first.”
Addressing a special session of the Guyanese Parliament in Georgetown, Modi stressed the need for inclusive progress and decisions benefiting all of humanity.
“The spirit of ‘democracy first’ teaches us to take everyone along and become partners in progress, while ‘humanity first’ guides decision-making for global welfare,” he stated.
This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the South American nation in 56 years.
Strengthening India-Guyana Relations
Modi highlighted the historical ties between India and Guyana, emphasizing shared democratic values and cultural heritage. He announced a series of agreements to deepen bilateral cooperation in sectors such as health, hydrocarbons, agriculture, and banking. Enhanced collaboration in defence, education, urban development, and food security was also agreed upon.
Modi envisioned Guyana as a potential bridge for opportunities between India and Latin America and proposed greater educational and innovative exchanges to unlock youth potential.
Global Cooperation and Regional Unity
Modi advocated for the collective voice of the Global South, urging nations to tackle challenges like terrorism, cybercrime, and drug trafficking. He emphasized India’s role as a first responder during crises, citing support extended to over 150 countries during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He called for the world to prioritize “democracy and humanity first” to combat global conflicts and foster cooperation in areas like space and maritime security. Modi reiterated his vision of women-led development, a major theme during India’s G-20 presidency.
Commitment to the Caribbean
During the 2nd India-Caricom Summit, Modi reaffirmed India’s support for Caribbean nations, outlining plans to collaborate in areas such as renewable energy, trade, healthcare, and maritime security. He emphasized cricket and culture as unifying factors while advocating for sustainable development in the region.
By focusing on mutual progress and cooperation, PM Modi’s visit to Guyana reinforces India’s commitment to fostering global partnerships and addressing shared challenges.
