Pakistan Among Top Food Crisis Countries

Pakistan remained among the world’s 10 largest acute food crisis countries in 2025, with around 11 million people facing severe food insecurity, according to the 2026 Global Report on Food Crises.

Pakistan Acute Food Crisis Deepens

The report placed Pakistan alongside Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Congo, Myanmar, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Yemen as major centres of acute hunger.

Around 9.3 million people in Pakistan were classified under “crisis” conditions, while another 1.7 million were placed in the more severe “emergency” category. These classifications indicate situations where urgent action is needed to protect lives and livelihoods.

Floods And Climate Shocks Hit Food Security

Extreme weather remained a major driver of food insecurity in Pakistan. Heavy monsoon rains and flash floods affected more than 6 million people in 2025, damaging cropland, livelihoods and infrastructure.

The report also identified Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh as areas of concern for nutrition risks. Vulnerabilities linked to poor diet, healthcare access, water, sanitation and disease continue to worsen the food security challenge.

Global Hunger Outlook Remains Bleak

Globally, 266 million people across 47 countries and territories faced high levels of acute food insecurity in 2025. Conflict remained the biggest driver, followed by climate extremes and economic shocks.

The report said famine was confirmed in Gaza and parts of Sudan during the year. It also warned that the outlook for 2026 remains bleak, with aid cuts, conflicts and food price pressures likely to keep hunger levels critical.
