Nine Killed, Six Injured in Blast at Illegal Firecracker Unit in Ahmedabad

At least nine people were killed and six others injured after a powerful explosion triggered a major fire at an allegedly illegal firecracker manufacturing unit on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on Saturday.

The blast occurred at a facility on Gatrad Road in the Ramol area and was reportedly powerful enough to damage surrounding structures. Those killed were believed to be workers employed at the unit, although authorities had not immediately released their identities.

Emergency Teams Launch Rescue Operation

Firefighters, police personnel and emergency workers rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the explosion. Several fire engines were deployed to control the blaze, while rescue teams searched the damaged premises for people who may have been trapped beneath debris.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials warned during the initial rescue operation that the casualty figures could change as teams continued searching the site.

Unit Allegedly Operated Without Valid Licence

Preliminary reports indicated that the facility did not possess a valid licence to manufacture or store firecrackers. Its earlier licence had reportedly been cancelled or denied renewal because of safety deficiencies, but the unit allegedly continued operating.

Police said they were verifying the status of the licence and examining whether explosive materials and firecrackers had been stored or manufactured in violation of safety regulations.

Investigators are also working to determine the immediate cause of the explosion.

Questions Raised Over Regulatory Enforcement

The tragedy has renewed concerns over illegal firecracker manufacturing units and the enforcement of safety standards in Gujarat. Authorities are expected to examine how the facility continued operating despite alleged licensing violations.

The incident comes amid continuing scrutiny of the firecracker industry following previous fatal explosions in the state. Police have launched a detailed investigation to establish responsibility and determine whether negligence by the operator or regulatory failures contributed to the deaths.
