Ajit Doval Urges BIMSTEC Unity Against Terror
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval has urged BIMSTEC member countries to strengthen cooperation against terrorism, organised crime and emerging security threats. He said the changing global security environment requires coordinated and practical action across the Bay of Bengal region.
Ajit Doval Calls for BIMSTEC Unity
Doval addressed the fifth BIMSTEC National Security Chiefs’ Meeting in New Delhi, attended by representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
He said geopolitical tensions, armed conflicts and rapid technological developments were creating new security challenges for the region. BIMSTEC nations, he added, must work together to protect regional peace, stability and economic development.
Doval also highlighted security, connectivity, capacity building and economic resilience as important priorities for the grouping.
Terrorism and Organised Crime Discussed
The security chiefs discussed ways to improve cooperation against terrorism, transnational organised crime, cyber threats and other cross-border challenges.
The meeting also focused on intelligence sharing, institutional coordination and capacity building among member countries. These mechanisms are expected to support faster and more effective responses to security threats affecting multiple nations.
Maritime security remained a major area of discussion because of the strategic importance of the Bay of Bengal.
BIMSTEC Strengthens Maritime Cooperation
Member countries adopted principles intended to improve safety, communication and predictability during interactions at sea.
The guidelines are expected to support greater maritime coordination and reduce the risk of misunderstandings in regional waters.
The meeting concluded with BIMSTEC countries reaffirming their commitment to deeper security cooperation and coordinated action against both traditional and emerging threats.
