Hamas Dissolves Gaza Governing Body

Hamas Announces Dissolution Of Gaza Governing Body

Hamas has announced the dissolution of the body that has governed Gaza for nearly two decades, clearing the way for a Palestinian technocratic committee to take over day-to-day civilian administration in the enclave. The move marks a significant political shift by the group, which has controlled Gaza since 2007.

The announcement came after Mohammed al-Farra, head of Gaza’s Government Emergency Committee, submitted his resignation and declared the committee dissolved. Hamas said the step was intended to facilitate the administrative transition and allow the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza to assume responsibilities under a wider post-war governance plan.

Hamas has said it is ready to hand over government responsibilities to the new committee, which is expected to manage civilian affairs in Gaza. However, the development does not settle the larger question of Hamas’s military role or disarmament, which remains one of the key unresolved issues in ongoing negotiations.

The move comes amid efforts to revive a stalled U.S.-backed peace plan for Gaza, including a transition in governance and reconstruction of the war-damaged territory. Israel has repeatedly ruled out any continued Hamas rule in Gaza, while also rejecting an immediate takeover by the Palestinian Authority at this stage.

The proposed technocratic committee is expected to oversee essential services and civilian administration, but its entry into Gaza and full operational control will depend on further political and security arrangements.
