Hamas has announced the dissolution of the civilian governing body that has administered Gaza for nearly two decades, clearing the way for a proposed technocratic committee to take over day-to-day administration in the war-hit enclave. Hamas has repeatedly said it is ready to step back from day-to-day governance, but the issue of disarmament remains unresolved. Israel has rejected any return of Hamas to power in Gaza, while also opposing an immediate full takeover by the Palestinian Authority. The governance issue remains one of the most difficult parts of the broader ceasefire and reconstruction process.
