EAM Jaishankar Tells Italy India’s Strikes Were Targeted and Justified
Amid the escalating standoff with Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in critical diplomatic dialogues on Thursday, including a high-level phone conversation with Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. The interaction was part of India’s broader outreach to key global partners to clarify the rationale and restraint behind its military operations following recent terror attacks.
Jaishankar conveyed to Tajani that India’s actions were “targeted and proportionate,” aimed solely at dismantling terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. He made it clear that India is not seeking conflict, but warned unequivocally that any further escalation would meet with a “decisive reply.”
Jaishankar-Italy Talks: Focus on Strategic Restraint
India’s outreach to Italy reflects its effort to ensure that major European partners understand the nature of its counter-terror strategy. The Italian Foreign Minister was briefed in detail about Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army’s recent strikes aimed at neutralizing militant launchpads and terror hideouts following the Pahalgam massacre. Jaishankar reiterated that India is committed to preserving peace but will not hesitate to act when national security is threatened.
He also held talks with European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas, further reinforcing the message that India’s response was calibrated and justified. In both interactions, Jaishankar emphasized that the international community must adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism.
India-Iran Relations Bolstered Amid Crisis
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar met Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi during the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission Meeting. The two sides signed key agreements, including memoranda on customs cooperation and medical regulation. The meeting underscored New Delhi’s continued focus on strengthening strategic partnerships even amid the looming threat of regional instability.
Operation Sindoor: Calibrated Force with Diplomatic Clarity
Jaishankar also took a moment to commend the Indian armed forces for executing Operation Sindoor with precision and restraint. He highlighted how the operation, launched in direct retaliation to the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, was an embodiment of India’s resolve to defend its citizens while maintaining adherence to international norms.
As tensions persist, Jaishankar’s coordinated diplomatic efforts serve as both a shield and a message — that India will not relent in the face of terror, but it also seeks global understanding and support for its actions rooted in self-defense.
