A nine-year-old Australian girl has died after police in Pakistan allegedly opened fire on her family’s vehicle during a robbery response in Punjab province, prompting Australia to call for a transparent investigation.

The child, identified as Hania Ahmed from Perth, was killed in Chakwal while visiting Pakistan with her family. The family was reportedly travelling in a rented vehicle when armed robbers stopped them at gunpoint.

According to preliminary details, police officers responding to the robbery allegedly mistook the family’s vehicle for one being used by the suspects. An officer then opened fire, killing Hania and injuring her father and brother. Her mother was not reported to have been injured.

Authorities in Punjab have confirmed that the officer involved in the shooting has been arrested and suspended. A formal investigation has been launched to determine how police misidentified the vehicle and whether operational procedures were violated.
