AI171 Crash Probe Faces New Questions
Aviation safety expert Captain Sanjay Karve has said the investigation into the Air India AI171 crash remains unresolved, with questions continuing over whether technical failure or cockpit action caused the disaster.
Air India AI171 crash investigation
Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. The crash killed 241 of the 242 people on board and 19 people on the ground.
A preliminary investigation found that both engine fuel control switches moved from RUN to CUTOFF within seconds of takeoff. However, investigators have not issued a final report, and authorities have cautioned against blaming the pilots before the probe is complete.
Boeing 787 fuel switch questions
Karve said the fuel switch movement remains one of the central issues in the case. He pointed to questions over whether the switches were moved manually or whether an electrical or software malfunction could have produced the same result.
He also referred to past concerns over fuel control switch locking mechanisms on some Boeing 787 aircraft. According to him, investigators must examine the aircraft’s electrical systems, engine control systems and maintenance records before reaching any conclusion.
Pilot error theory under scrutiny
Karve said a pilot-error conclusion would be the easiest explanation but could face legal and technical challenges. He argued that American interests may prefer such a finding because it would protect the reputation of the Boeing 787 programme.
The final AAIB report is still awaited. Until then, aviation experts say the cause of the crash cannot be confirmed. The investigation is expected to remain closely watched because of its implications for Air India, Boeing, regulators and global aviation safety.
