Centre To Review NDPS Act Loopholes
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said the Centre is relooking at the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act to plug loopholes allegedly exploited by drug trafficking networks. He asked states to send suggestions as the government prepares to strengthen India’s anti-narcotics framework.
NDPS Act Review To Plug Loopholes
Addressing the 10th apex-level meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre in New Delhi, Shah said the Centre is reviewing the NDPS Act to make it more effective against organised drug syndicates. He said state police chiefs can send suggestions to the Ministry of Home Affairs, while chief secretaries can forward inputs to the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance.
The move comes as the government seeks tighter coordination between central agencies, state police and enforcement bodies to tackle changing drug trafficking methods.
Amit Shah Anti-Drug Roadmap
Shah outlined a three-pronged strategy of “detect, disrupt and destroy” to target the narcotics ecosystem. He said enforcement agencies must act firmly against traffickers and suppliers while maintaining a sympathetic approach towards drug abuse victims.
He also released the Vision Document on Drug Control 2026-2029, which focuses on enforcement, intelligence gathering, precursor and synthetic drug control, demand reduction, rehabilitation, capacity building and coordination.
Narcotics Control And State Coordination
The Home Minister asked states to ensure real-time information sharing through Narcotics Control Bureau portals. He also called for NCORD meetings to become more result-oriented, with proper follow-up on decisions taken in previous meetings.
Shah said drug trafficking is linked not only to law and order but also to internal security, social stability, economic interests and the future of young people. He stressed that the fight against narcotics requires joint action by all states, central agencies and enforcement institutions.
