Six passengers were injured after a Zurich-bound SWISS flight aborted takeoff at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport following an engine failure and fire shortly after the aircraft began its takeoff roll.
SWISS Delhi-Zurich Flight Faces Engine Fire
Flight LX147, an Airbus A330, was scheduled to fly from Delhi to Zurich when the incident occurred shortly after 1 am. Officials said one of the aircraft’s engines developed a problem and caught fire during the takeoff run.
The pilots rejected takeoff and brought the aircraft to a stop on the runway. Emergency response teams were deployed immediately as the crew began evacuation procedures.
Six Passengers Injured During Evacuation
All passengers were evacuated on the runway using emergency slides. Six passengers sustained injuries during the evacuation and were taken to hospital for medical attention.
SWISS said there were 228 passengers and four infants on board the aircraft. The airline said the crew was unharmed and that it had set up a task force to handle the incident and assist passengers.
Delhi Airport Emergency Response Activated
The aircraft involved was identified as an Airbus A330 with registration HB-JHK. Airport emergency teams responded to the engine fire, and the situation was brought under control.
The incident caused a major aviation scare at Delhi airport, though a larger accident was avoided due to the crew’s decision to abort takeoff. Aviation authorities are expected to examine the aircraft and review the sequence of events that led to the engine failure.
