Vijay Oath-Taking Hits Majority Roadblock
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief Vijay’s expected oath-taking as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has hit a roadblock after Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar reportedly asked him to show clear proof of majority support before forming the government.
Vijay Stakes Claim To Form Government
Vijay met the Governor at Lok Bhavan and formally staked claim to form the next government after TVK emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election.
TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, falling short of the 118-seat majority mark. The Congress, which won five seats, has extended support to TVK, taking Vijay’s current support tally to 113 MLAs.
Governor Seeks Majority Proof
The Governor was reportedly not satisfied with the numbers presented by TVK and asked Vijay to provide proof of majority before moving ahead with the swearing-in process.
Preparations had been underway for Vijay’s oath-taking ceremony, but the development has created uncertainty over the timing of government formation. TVK will now need to secure additional support or present a convincing route to majority support.
Tamil Nadu Hung Assembly Crisis
Tamil Nadu is facing a hung Assembly after no party or alliance crossed the majority mark. TVK remains the largest party, while the DMK-led bloc and AIADMK-led side are also below the required numbers.
The AIADMK has already ruled out supporting TVK, making the political arithmetic more difficult for Vijay. With Congress backing confirmed but still insufficient, the next step will depend on whether TVK can secure support from independents, smaller parties, or obtain a floor-test route acceptable to the Governor.
