BNP Congratulates BJP With Teesta Request

Bangladesh ruling Nationalist Party leader Tarique Rahman has congratulated the BJP on its West Bengal Assembly election victory and urged the new state government to revisit the long-pending Teesta water-sharing issue.

BNP Congratulates BJP On Bengal Win

Tarique Rahman said the BJP’s victory in West Bengal could open a new chapter in discussions between India and Bangladesh. His remarks came after the BJP defeated the Trinamool Congress and formed a new political equation in the border state.

The BNP leader linked the Bengal result to the future of bilateral ties, especially on water sharing, trade and connectivity. His statement showed how the state election outcome has drawn attention beyond India’s borders.

Teesta Water Agreement Back In Focus

Rahman claimed the previous Mamata Banerjee-led government was an obstacle to finalising the Teesta agreement. He expressed hope that a BJP government in West Bengal, led by Suvendu Adhikari, would align more closely with the Narendra Modi government on the issue.

The Teesta water-sharing agreement has remained unresolved for years despite repeated discussions between New Delhi and Dhaka. Bangladesh has long sought a settlement because the river is important for irrigation and water security in its northern regions.

India Bangladesh Ties May See Shift

The BJP’s win in West Bengal could reduce political friction between the Centre and the state on sensitive bilateral issues. With the same party now in power in New Delhi and Kolkata, coordination on Bangladesh-related matters may become easier.

However, any movement on the Teesta issue will still require careful handling, as river-water sharing remains politically sensitive in both West Bengal and Bangladesh. Rahman’s statement has added a diplomatic angle to the BJP’s Bengal victory and its impact on India-Bangladesh relations.
