Vedanta Plant Blast Kills 14 In Chhattisgarh

At least 14 people were killed and 19 others were injured after a boiler tube blast at Vedanta’s thermal power plant in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district on April 14. The explosion released superheated steam that struck workers at the site, turning an ordinary afternoon into a major industrial disaster.

The incident took place around 2.30 pm at the Singhitarai power plant. Officials said the blast occurred in a boiler tube, after which steam at an extremely high temperature spread across the work area. Many of those affected were contract workers engaged in painting and maintenance activities at the plant.

Boiler Tube Explosion Kills Workers

Initial reports from the ground indicated that several workers were either having lunch or returning to work when the steam burst hit. Survivors described panic, smoke and confusion immediately after the explosion. Some workers were reportedly stationed at height while others were in open areas when the blast took place. Rescue operations began after the boiler was shut down and cooled.

Chhattisgarh Government Orders Probe

District authorities have ordered a magisterial inquiry into the explosion. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said a thorough investigation would be conducted and promised strict action against anyone found guilty. He also announced financial assistance for the victims’ families and support for those injured.

Compensation And Treatment For Injured

The Prime Minister announced ex gratia relief of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 for the injured. The state government separately announced Rs 5 lakh for each deceased worker’s family and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Most of the injured have been admitted to hospitals in nearby Raigarh, while some were shifted to Bilaspur for treatment.
