Kolkata Warehouse Collapse Toll Rises To Nine

The death toll in the Kolkata warehouse collapse has risen to nine after rescue teams pulled more workers from the debris of an under-construction structure in the Taratala area. Emergency operations are continuing as several people are still feared trapped beneath concrete slabs and twisted steel.

Kolkata Warehouse Collapse Death Toll Rises

The three-storey under-construction warehouse collapsed in Taratala on Wednesday, trapping several workers under heavy debris. At least 20 people were injured and taken to hospital, while rescue personnel continued searching for survivors through the night.

Officials said the rescue operation was difficult because of the weight of the collapsed concrete, iron beams and construction material. Teams used cranes, gas cutters and other equipment to clear the rubble carefully.

Rescue Operations Continue In Taratala

Personnel from the Army, NDRF, Kolkata Police, fire services and disaster management teams joined the rescue effort. Several workers were pulled out alive, but authorities said the possibility of more people being trapped could not be ruled out.

Police have arrested people linked to the project as part of the investigation. Officials are expected to examine construction permissions, safety compliance, site supervision and the structural condition of the building before the collapse.

Kolkata Construction Projects Suspended

Following the incident, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered suspension of under-construction commercial projects approved under the previous TMC government within Kolkata’s civic area until July 31.

The decision is aimed at reviewing safety standards and preventing similar incidents during the monsoon period. The collapse has renewed focus on construction safety, illegal approvals, building-site supervision and accountability in urban development projects across Kolkata.
