US Reaches FY 2027 H-1B Visa Cap as Workers Explore Alternative Routes
The United States has received enough petitions to meet the H-1B visa cap for fiscal year 2027, closing another highly competitive application cycle for skilled foreign workers. The annual allocation includes 65,000 visas under the regular cap and 20,000 additional places for applicants holding advanced degrees from American institutions.
H-1B Petitions Continue Under Review
Petitions that were selected and filed within the permitted period will continue to be processed. Employers and applicants may still receive requests for additional evidence while their cases remain under review.
Selection and submission do not automatically guarantee approval, as each petition must still satisfy the eligibility and documentation requirements of the programme.
The initial electronic registration selection process was completed earlier in the year, allowing selected employers to begin filing cap-subject petitions from April 1.
Further Selection Round Appears Unlikely
Reaching the cap reduces the possibility of another selection round for FY 2027. Additional rounds are generally held only when the number of properly filed or approved petitions falls below the statutory allocation.
The development leaves many employers and foreign professionals without an immediate route through the regular H-1B process.
Alternative US Work Visas Gain Attention
Applicants are increasingly examining other employment-based visa categories. These include the O-1 visa for individuals with extraordinary ability and the L-1 visa for employees transferring within multinational companies.
Eligible Australian professionals may consider the E-3 visa, while certain Canadian and Mexican citizens can apply for TN status in designated occupations.
These options have different eligibility standards and are not direct replacements for the H-1B programme.
