Shakib Al Hasan Cleared for Kanpur Test, Confirms Bangladesh Coach Chandika Hathurusingha
Bangladesh head coach Chandika Hathurusingha has confirmed that star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will be available for the second Test against India in Kanpur. Shakib struggled in the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, going wicketless in 21 overs and posting scores of 32 and 25.
In the first innings, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto delayed Shakib’s introduction into the bowling attack until after the 50th over, raising concerns about the player’s fitness. Shakib’s form and health came under scrutiny, particularly as he seemed out of rhythm, with reports suggesting he was dealing with a finger injury. The all-rounder was even seen biting a black strap while batting, an attempt to maintain proper head positioning.
“There are no doubts about him. I haven’t heard anything from the physio about his injury. He is eligible for selection,” Hathurusingha confirmed during a press conference.
The coach acknowledged the team’s overall performance in Chennai was below par, expressing disappointment with more than just Shakib’s showing. “It’s not only about his performance; I am disappointed with everyone’s performance. We could have done much better in Chennai,” he said.
Hathurusingha added that Shakib is well aware of the need to step up. “I am sure that he himself feels that he needs to perform better. He batted well in the second innings, although he couldn’t get a big score. It’s not that he isn’t trying. Opponents have a strong bowling attack,” he noted.
Shakib will also have the opportunity to reach a personal milestone in Kanpur, needing just eight more wickets to complete 250 in Test cricket.
