India Says No Deadline for Sheikh Hasina Extradition

India has said there is no fixed deadline for the return of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with New Delhi maintaining that Dhaka’s extradition request is being examined through an established legal process.

India Says Hasina Extradition Has No Timeline

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi said no timeframe could be given for Hasina’s possible return because the extradition request involves a structured legal process.

He said India has repeatedly conveyed that such matters cannot be decided through political timelines alone and must proceed through the appropriate legal mechanisms.

Hasina has been living in India since August 5, 2024, when she left Bangladesh following the collapse of her government amid widespread anti-government protests.

India Says It Had Little Choice in 2024

Trivedi also said India had little choice but to allow Hasina to enter the country when she arrived in 2024.

He noted that she was still serving as Bangladesh’s prime minister at the time and had been brought to India aboard a Bangladeshi aircraft under military escort.

India has maintained that it did not organise her departure from Bangladesh.

Hasina Issue Continues to Affect India-Bangladesh Ties

Bangladesh has repeatedly sought Hasina’s extradition, keeping the issue at the centre of diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

She was tried in absentia in Bangladesh after leaving the country, while successive governments in Dhaka have continued to press India for her return.

Despite differences over Hasina, both sides continue diplomatic engagement on wider bilateral issues, including discussions surrounding a possible visit by Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India.
