Scott Bessent Says Iran Blockade Will Continue
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said Washington will continue its blockade linked to Iran until freedom of navigation is restored in the Strait of Hormuz, while sharply criticising Iran’s leadership amid rising tensions in West Asia.
US Treasury Secretary Targets Iran Leadership
Bessent described Iran’s leadership as disconnected from realities on the ground and accused Tehran’s rulers of failing to understand the scale of pressure building against them.
His remarks came as the United States continued to tighten economic and maritime pressure on Iran, including warnings to shipping firms and businesses against making payments or conducting transactions that could help Tehran.
Strait Of Hormuz Blockade Continues
Bessent said the blockade would remain in place until freedom of navigation returns to conditions that existed before February 27. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil chokepoints, making any disruption a major concern for global energy markets.
The US has claimed control over key maritime routes and has warned companies that dealings with Iranian-linked shipping or aviation networks could expose them to sanctions.
Iran Faces Economic Pressure
Bessent also claimed that Iran is facing a shortage of dollars, along with food and gasoline rationing. Washington has used sanctions, financial restrictions and maritime pressure as part of its broader effort to weaken Iran’s ability to sustain the conflict.
Iran has rejected US pressure and responded angrily to Bessent’s remarks. The standoff has added to concerns over shipping, oil prices and regional stability as diplomatic efforts remain uncertain.
