Rohit Sharma Rules Out Mohammed Shami for Australia Test Series
India’s Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed that pacer Mohammed Shami will not be part of the squad for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Test series in Australia.
Addressing the media ahead of the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru, Rohit shared the disappointing news regarding Shami’s rehabilitation progress, stating that the veteran bowler is not fully fit to make the trip.
Shami’s Fitness Concerns
Shami, who has been sidelined since the 2023 ODI World Cup, has faced several challenges in his recovery. Despite hopes of his return to international cricket, the pacer has encountered setbacks, including swelling in his knees, which delayed his rehabilitation. Rohit emphasized that Shami is currently undergoing treatment at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and is working with doctors and physios to regain full fitness.
No Risking an “Undercooked” Shami
Rohit made it clear that the team management is not willing to take any risks with Shami’s health. Given his long absence from cricket, the fast bowler would be “undercooked” for the high-intensity series in Australia. Sharma stressed the importance of bringing fully fit players to such a crucial series and acknowledged that it is not ideal for Shami to return without being at his best.
Focus on Full Recovery
Rohit expressed hope for Shami’s complete recovery before he returns to international cricket, adding that the team is keeping its fingers crossed for his progress. The captain reiterated that rushing Shami back into action after a prolonged absence could do more harm than good, especially considering the demands on fast bowlers.
India will now look to other options for the Test series in Australia, while Shami continues his recovery at the NCA.
