Supreme Court Takes Up Delhi-NCR Rape Cases
The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of a series of recent rape cases in Delhi-NCR, observing that the incidents point to a systemic failure of law enforcement and public administration in ensuring basic safety.
Supreme Court Flags Delhi-NCR Rape Cases
A bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran expressed concern over recurring sexual offences across the National Capital Region and directed that a suo motu case be registered to examine the issue.
The court referred to multiple recent cases, including the gangrape and murder of a teenage girl in Delhi’s Swarup Nagar and the alleged sexual assault of a minor inside a moving sleeper bus.
In the bus case, the court noted that police allegedly failed to intercept the vehicle during its approximately 47-km journey from Greater Noida to Delhi.
Court Questions Progress Since Nirbhaya Case
The bench drew parallels with the 2012 Nirbhaya case and questioned whether law-enforcement systems had made meaningful progress in preventing serious sexual crimes.
It said repeated incidents raised larger concerns about policing, surveillance, patrolling and administrative preparedness in public spaces.
The court stressed that roads, parks, buses, metro stations, subways and footbridges could not be allowed to become high-risk areas because of inadequate lighting, poor surveillance or insufficient policing.
Supreme Court Seeks Accountability From Authorities
The bench said expressions of concern or solidarity by public authorities were not enough without measurable action and accountability.
It observed that responsibility must be fixed on authorities entrusted with crime prevention, public order and protection of vulnerable people.
The suo motu proceedings are expected to examine institutional failures and possible measures to strengthen public safety across Delhi-NCR.
