31 Killed in Three South Africa Mass Shootings
At least 31 people have been killed and dozens wounded in three separate mass shootings across South Africa, prompting police to launch multiple manhunts as authorities confront another deadly surge in violent crime.
17 Killed in Wedela Township Mass Shooting
The deadliest attack took place at a tavern in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg, on Saturday evening.
Police said eight unidentified gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols opened fire on patrons outside the tavern before entering the premises and continuing to shoot. Seventeen people, including 13 men and four women, were killed, while 15 others sustained gunshot wounds.
The attackers also allegedly searched some victims and took mobile phones before fleeing in two unidentified vehicles. No arrests have been announced and the motive remains under investigation.
10 Dead in Lwandle Shooting Near Cape Town
In another attack early Sunday, gunmen opened fire at an entertainment venue in Lwandle township in the Western Cape.
Ten people were killed and 11 others wounded. Five victims died at the scene, while another five later succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
Police have launched a search for multiple suspects.
Four Killed in Khayelitsha Attack
A third shooting in Khayelitsha township left four people dead on Saturday evening.
Three men with multiple gunshot wounds were found at the scene, including two inside a vehicle. A fourth victim was taken to hospital but later died.
Authorities have not established any connection between the three attacks. The shootings come amid growing concern over the prevalence of gun violence and mass killings in South Africa, where police are continuing investigations into the motives and identities of those responsible.
