PM Modi and Iran President Discuss West Asia Conflict at BRICS Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Iran’s President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit, where they discussed regional developments, focusing on the escalating conflict in West Asia.
PM Modi expressed deep concern over the widening of the conflict and reiterated India’s call for de-escalation, emphasizing the protection of civilians and the critical role of diplomacy in resolving tensions.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations and Chabahar Port Agreement
During the meeting, PM Modi congratulated President Pezeshkian on his recent election and welcomed Iran’s inclusion in the BRICS grouping. The two leaders reviewed their countries’ long-standing bilateral relations, identifying ways to strengthen cooperation in various fields. A key highlight of their discussion was the long-term contract for the development of the Chabahar Port, a significant milestone in their partnership. Both leaders reaffirmed the port’s importance for enhancing trade and economic links with Central Asia and contributing to the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
Dialogue on Regional Peace and Cooperation in Multilateral Platforms
The leaders also discussed the ongoing conflict in West Asia. PM Modi emphasized the need for dialogue and diplomacy to bring stability to the region, stressing the importance of protecting civilians. President Pezeshkian acknowledged India’s potential role in de-escalating tensions, given its strong relationships with the involved parties. Additionally, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continuing cooperation through multilateral platforms such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri later highlighted that Afghanistan was another key topic of discussion, with both leaders agreeing to maintain peace and stability in the region while continuing humanitarian efforts for the Afghan people. Misri also noted Iran’s appreciation for India’s role in facilitating its accession to BRICS and the SCO.
