Pakistan Shells JandK’s Kupwara for Second Day Amid Operation Sindoor Fallout
Tensions along the India-Pakistan border remained high on May 8, 2025, as Pakistani forces launched another round of cross-border shelling targeting the Karnah sector in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district. This marks the second consecutive day of such attacks, following India’s precision military strikes under Operation Sindoor.
The shelling began shortly after midnight, with mortars landing in civilian areas, forcing many residents to flee their homes and seek shelter in safer zones. Though no casualties have been reported so far in Kupwara, the constant threat and destruction have left the region on edge.
India Responds to Provocation
The Indian Army responded swiftly and proportionately to neutralize the origin of the Pakistani shelling. Military sources stated that Indian forces targeted Pakistani forward posts responsible for initiating the unprovoked aggression. The region continues to remain on high alert, with additional troops deployed to ensure civilian safety and maintain defensive readiness.
India has reiterated that Operation Sindoor was an intelligence-based, precise response to eliminate terror infrastructure across the border, primarily aimed at camps involved in the Pahalgam attack which killed 26 civilians. The government has emphasized that the operation was limited in scope, non-escalatory, and focused solely on dismantling terrorist launchpads and training hubs.
Rising International Concern
As military activity intensifies along the Line of Control, the global community has called for de-escalation. The United Nations and several major powers have urged both nations to show restraint and re-engage through diplomatic channels to avoid further deterioration of regional stability.
Meanwhile, in Kupwara and surrounding areas, local authorities have implemented emergency protocols, opened relief shelters, and are continuously monitoring the ground situation. Schools have been shut, and residents have been advised to remain indoors.
