Omar Abdullah Refuses to Cut Tricolour Ribbon
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah refused to cut a ribbon designed in the colours of the national flag during an event in Srinagar, saying it could not be cut. The moment drew attention across political lines, with the BJP also backing his stand and calling for accountability over how such a ribbon was used in the first place.
Omar Abdullah Tricolour Ribbon Incident
The incident took place during the inauguration of the handicrafts department’s ‘Know Your Artisans’ event at Kashmir Haat in Srinagar. As Omar Abdullah prepared to open the event, he noticed that the ribbon resembled the Tricolour. He immediately objected and said it should not be cut. Instead of proceeding with the usual ceremony, the ribbon was untied and handed back to organisers to be kept respectfully.
Srinagar Event Draws Political Attention
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, who was present alongside Abdullah, also agreed with the decision. What could have remained a small ceremonial detail quickly turned into a wider political talking point because of the sensitivity attached to the national flag and its symbolism in public life, especially in Jammu and Kashmir.
BJP Backs Omar Abdullah Stand
The BJP welcomed Abdullah’s refusal to cut the ribbon and described the use of a Tricolour-style ribbon as a serious lapse. Party leaders in Jammu and Kashmir said the national flag should not be used in a manner that reduces its dignity during public functions. They also called for an inquiry into how the arrangement was approved and demanded action against those responsible for the oversight.
