Omar Abdullah Backs India-Pak Dialogue
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has backed efforts to resume dialogue between India and Pakistan, saying no one should object to talks aimed at improving relations between the two neighbouring countries.
Omar Abdullah Backs India Pakistan Dialogue
Speaking in Shopian, Abdullah said tensions between India and Pakistan have continued for decades and that dialogue remains necessary if both countries want to reduce hostility. He said any step that helps improve relations should be welcomed rather than opposed.
The Chief Minister also referred to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s approach, recalling his emphasis on dialogue and better relations with neighbours despite difficult circumstances.
J&K Chief Minister Questions Double Standards
Abdullah questioned why leaders from Jammu and Kashmir are criticised when they call for talks with Pakistan, while similar views expressed by others do not attract the same reaction. He said political leaders from the region are often targeted for advocating dialogue even when the objective is peace.
His remarks came amid renewed calls from several political and civil society voices for India and Pakistan to restore engagement and reduce tensions.
India Pakistan Relations Remain Strained
Relations between India and Pakistan have remained tense over terrorism, border incidents and unresolved political issues. New Delhi has consistently maintained that meaningful engagement can take place only in an atmosphere free from terror and violence.
Abdullah said dialogue does not mean ignoring security concerns, but argued that communication is necessary to address long-standing problems. He said improving ties between the two neighbours would benefit the region and reduce pressure on people living in Jammu and Kashmir.
