Nine Killed in Massive Kolkata Hotel Fire

At least nine people, including a four-year-old child, were killed and six others injured after a major fire broke out in a five-storey building housing hotels on Mirza Ghalib Street in central Kolkata early Wednesday. Dense smoke and poor ventilation reportedly complicated rescue operations as several occupants became trapped on the upper floors.

Kolkata Hotel Fire Kills Nine

The blaze broke out at around 1:45 am on August 19, when many guests were asleep. Flames and thick smoke rapidly spread through parts of the building, prompting an emergency response from police, firefighters and disaster-management personnel.

Five fire engines were deployed to control the blaze, while the injured were taken to hospital for treatment. Firefighters reportedly faced difficulties reaching the upper floors because dense smoke had filled stairways and other access points.

Fire Safety Lapses Under Investigation

Authorities are examining whether an electrical short circuit triggered the fire.

Poor ventilation, obstructed escape routes and inadequate emergency preparedness are also being investigated as possible factors that may have worsened the incident.

The precise cause of the blaze will be established following detailed fire and forensic investigations.

Kolkata Blaze Raises Hotel Safety Concerns

The tragedy has renewed scrutiny of fire-safety compliance at hotels and other commercial establishments across West Bengal.

Authorities are expected to examine fire exits, electrical systems, emergency equipment and regulatory compliance at the affected premises as part of the investigation.

The incident has also intensified calls for stronger inspections of accommodation facilities to ensure that fire-safety standards and evacuation procedures are properly maintained.
