Narendra Modi Becomes India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, completing 4,399 days in office since first taking oath on May 26, 2014. The milestone places him ahead of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s elected prime ministerial tenure from 1952 to 1964.

Narendra Modi Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister

Prime Minister Modi crossed the record on June 10, 2026, after serving continuously as India’s elected head of government for 4,399 days. He first assumed office on May 26, 2014, after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured a majority in the Lok Sabha elections.

The milestone is being measured against Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s tenure as an elected Prime Minister, which began after India’s first general elections. Nehru took oath as elected Prime Minister on May 13, 1952, and continued until May 27, 1964, serving 4,398 days in that elected tenure.

Modi Surpasses Nehru Elected Tenure Record

While Nehru served as Prime Minister from 1947, the comparison here is based on his tenure after the first Lok Sabha elections. By that measure, Modi has now surpassed Nehru’s elected prime ministerial record.

Modi has led the government through three consecutive national mandates in 2014, 2019 and 2024. His tenure has been marked by political continuity at the national level, with the BJP remaining the central force in government across all three terms.

India Leadership Milestone Under Modi

During Modi’s time in office, the government has highlighted welfare delivery, digital public infrastructure, infrastructure expansion and India’s growing global role as key areas of policy focus.

The milestone also comes at a time when India continues to position itself as a major global economy and a leading voice for the Global South. Modi’s long tenure reflects a rare period of sustained leadership in India’s parliamentary democracy.
