Himachal Flags 67 Glacial Lakes as High Risk

Himachal Pradesh has identified 67 glacial lakes as vulnerable to potential outburst floods and plans to install early-warning systems at four of the highest-risk locations. The move is part of a wider effort to strengthen disaster preparedness in the Himalayan state as climate-driven glacial instability increases.

Himachal Identifies 67 Vulnerable Glacial Lakes

The lakes have been classified after scientific assessments examined factors such as size, rate of expansion, surrounding terrain and potential downstream impact.

Authorities are particularly concerned about glacial lake outburst floods, or GLOFs, which can release large volumes of water and debris downstream with little warning.

Several of the vulnerable lakes are located in high-altitude areas of Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti and other Himalayan districts where access and continuous monitoring remain difficult.

Early Warning Systems Planned at Four Lakes

The state government plans to install early-warning systems at four high-risk glacial lakes as an initial priority.

These systems are expected to include automated monitoring equipment capable of tracking water levels, weather conditions and other indicators that may signal an increased risk of sudden flooding.

Alerts could then be transmitted to downstream communities and disaster-management authorities, giving residents more time to evacuate if conditions deteriorate.

Himalayan Glacier Risks Draw Greater Attention

Himachal Pradesh has intensified monitoring of glacial lakes following repeated episodes of extreme rainfall, landslides and flash floods across the Himalayan region.

Scientists have warned that warming temperatures can accelerate glacier retreat and contribute to the formation or expansion of unstable lakes held back by loose rock, ice or moraine material.

The state is also examining satellite monitoring and field surveys to track changes in potentially dangerous lakes and improve evacuation planning for vulnerable settlements.
