Kiren Rijiju Warns NY Protesters Over Indian Flag Insult
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has strongly condemned protesters accused of desecrating the Indian national flag outside Madison Square Garden in New York, warning that criticism of the RSS, BJP or Indian government was legitimate but insulting the country and its flag crossed a line.

Rijiju reacted after videos circulated online showing protesters allegedly disrespecting the Tricolour during demonstrations held outside Madison Square Garden on August 29.
One video appeared to show a protester tying an Indian flag around his foot, while another purportedly showed demonstrators tearing a Tricolour. Pro-Khalistan slogans were also raised during the protest.
Rijiju said protesters were free to criticise political parties, organisations or the government but warned them against insulting India or its national symbols, adding that such actions would “cost you dearly”.
Protest Held During Mohan Bhagwat Event
The demonstration coincided with RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s address at the Universal Oneness Celebration inside Madison Square Garden.
More than 6,000 members of the Indian-American community and interfaith representatives attended the programme, where Bhagwat spoke about diversity, coexistence and community cooperation.
Pro-Khalistan activists were among groups protesting outside the venue. Sikhs for Justice, which is banned in India under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, was reportedly involved in demonstrations surrounding the event.
Indian Flag Incident Draws Strong Reaction
Videos of the alleged flag desecration triggered criticism in India, with social media users calling for those involved to be identified.
Some also demanded that authorities determine whether any Indian citizens participated and whether action could be taken under applicable laws.
No official announcement of legal proceedings against individual protesters had been made when Rijiju issued his warning.
