Israel PM Netanyahu To Run For Re-Election

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will seek re-election this year, his Likud Party said, after U.S. President Donald Trump raised doubts over whether the Israeli leader would contest another term. Israel’s next election has not yet been formally announced but must be held by October.

Netanyahu Re-Election Bid Confirmed

Netanyahu’s Likud Party issued a brief statement confirming that he would run in the upcoming election and expressed confidence that he would win. The announcement came after Trump said he was unsure whether Netanyahu wanted to continue in office.

The election will be Israel’s first national vote since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, which triggered Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and reshaped the country’s security and political debate.

Trump Raises Doubts On Netanyahu

Trump’s remarks were reported by ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl, who said the U.S. President questioned whether Netanyahu would seek another term after a long political career.

The comments drew attention because Netanyahu and Trump have had a close political relationship, though recent developments have placed renewed focus on Israel’s domestic politics and its ties with Washington.

Israel Election After Gaza War

Netanyahu returned to power in December 2022 at the head of Israel’s most right-wing coalition. His current term has been marked by mass protests, judicial overhaul disputes and wars involving Gaza, Lebanon and Iran.

The coming election is expected to be closely watched as Israeli voters assess Netanyahu’s leadership after the October 7 attack and the conflicts that followed. His campaign will also unfold amid concerns over security, governance and Israel’s international position.
